Bowel Cancer Screening
You may receive a text from us inviting you for bowel cancer screening.
If you are 60-74 years old you may also get contacted by the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme inviting you for a testing kit. The programme is currently being extended to also invite patients aged 50-59 years.
People aged between 60-74 are invited to take part in bowel cancer screening every two years.
Bowel cancer screening has the potential to detect an additional 1500 cancers through screening per year in 60-74 year olds.
Bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK.
Bowel cancer is the second cause of cancer deaths.
Bowel cancer screening is an effective way to detect bowel cancer before the symptoms show. When bowel cancer is diagnosed at the earliest stage more than 9 in 10 people will survive bowel cancer for more than five years. Treatment for bowel cancer has a higher success rate if detected early.
A bowel cancer screening FIT kit will be sent through the post to those eligible.
DO NOT IGNORE YOUR BOWEL SCREENING KIT
However if you have been sent a text from us to request a kit, please email thursbysurgery@nhs.net with your full name and date of birth and whether you want to accept or decline.
