Sean Freyne
Practice Paramedic
Sean joined Thursby Surgery in October 2024.
Sean started working in the NHS in 1988 and since then he has had a varied career over the last 34 years.
He started working as a hospital porter aged 18 years at Burnley General hospital and following attending night school and obtaining the required GCSE qualifications, he then applied to the then Lancashire Ambulance Service (Now NWAS - North West Ambulance Service) where he qualified as State Registered Paramedic, he remained in that post until 2014. He was also a retained firefighter working both jobs at that time but he gave up his firefighting position in 1993 as things became too time consuming doing both jobs, and also due to the volume of academic training he was doing to obtain his degree. He then attended John Moore's University in Liverpool where he gained additional qualifications which enabled him to progress to become a credited practitioner in primary care. He obtained a position in 2016 at Airedale Hospital in Keighley where he worked with the acute illness team and Telemedicine until 2017. He then moved over to Preston Royal Hospital where he worked as a Paramedic Practitioner in the Urgent Care Centre unit until 2018 when he secured a post at Briercliffe Medical Centre as a Paramedic Practitioner and independent prescriber where he stayed for 6 years.
He then took early retirement at aged 55, in May of this year (2024), and took 6 months out before coming to Thursby Surgery working part time - 2 days per week, which he says is a lovely work and life balance and allows him to provide support to his children and child care for his grandchildren where needed.
Outside of work, Sean plays an electric guitar and bass guitar and he has played in several bands over the years. He currently spends most weekends playing in pubs, clubs and festivals all over the country in his ska and reggae band which he says is really enjoyable but at times quite time consuming.
